Help Students Build Advantage Before Opportunity Arrives

Career Centers help students prepare for opportunity.

GradPlanHQ helps students create experience, capture evidence, build relationships, increase visibility, and maintain momentum before and between high-stakes career moments.

New: Career Services

Career Centers help students prepare for opportunity. GradPlanHQ helps students build momentum between appointments.

Experience compounds.

Students who start earlier have more time to build Experience, Proof, Relationships, and Visibility.

The Challenge Isn't Commitment

Career Services teams already understand the importance of career readiness. The challenge is helping more students act earlier, use available resources, and keep moving between appointments, workshops, career fairs, and recruiting cycles.

Students arrive at different times. Some begin during the first year. Others arrive after missing an internship cycle. Staff time is finite. Internship access is uneven. Valuable work is often completed without artifacts, metrics, stories, or references.

The question isn't whether career development matters. The question is how to help more students turn good guidance into repeated action and visible progress.

Why Starting Earlier Matters

Career readiness should begin before internship recruiting.

First-year students don't need to search for jobs immediately. They need time to explore direction, practice professional actions, build relationships, learn from setbacks, and create evidence. Starting early gives advantage time to compound.

Start earlier when you can. Start now when you can't.

Four in Ten Students Have Internships

According to Gallup, 41% of currently enrolled bachelor's degree students have completed an internship while in college.

Internships matter. Students with relevant internship experience are more likely to secure strong employment outcomes after graduation.

Career Services teams work hard to help students access those opportunities.

The challenge is that internship access isn't evenly distributed.

Gallup found even lower participation rates among first-generation students and students attending public institutions.

Career Services works hard to expand access to internships and other high-impact opportunities. GradPlanHQ helps students continue building momentum while those opportunities are being pursued.

What About the Other Six?

If four students secure internships, what's the plan for the other six?

  • Some students are still exploring careers.
  • Some can't find an internship that fits.
  • Some can't afford one.
  • Some are balancing work, family responsibilities, athletics, transportation, or other commitments.
  • Others simply arrive late to career development and need a way to build momentum quickly.

GradPlanHQ helps students keep building experience, evidence, relationships, and visibility whether they secure a traditional internship or create meaningful experience through networking, service, leadership, credentials, campus roles, community projects, employment, and Project Launchers.

The goal isn't to replace internships.
The goal is to help every student keep moving forward.

We Don't Believe Students Need More Content

We believe students need help making better use of the resources, experiences, relationships, and opportunities that already exist around them.

Career Services, faculty, alumni, employers, student organizations, community partners, courses, campus jobs, volunteer roles, and existing tools already provide valuable assets.

GradPlanHQ helps students connect those assets to strategy and turn them into meaningful action.

Extend Impact Between Appointments

Career Services appointments are powerful.

The challenge is what happens between them.

GradPlanHQ gives students a place to take action, capture evidence, reflect on results, build relationships, and maintain momentum before the next appointment arrives.

Students Don't Need the Same Next Step

Career Services professionals see this every day.

One student is trying to figure out where to start.

Another needs experience.

Another already has experience but struggles to explain it.

Another needs networking practice.

Another needs stronger interview stories.

Another missed an internship and needs a new path forward.

Another is graduating soon and needs momentum quickly.

GradPlanHQ helps students identify the professional-development job most important right now and choose a practical way to move it forward.

Students use the Growth Cycle Quiz to identify a starting point, a realistic pace, and the jobs they want help completing.

Then they choose recurring meetup sessions designed to help them make progress on those jobs.

That's why the same Practice Field can support first-year students, internship seekers, graduating seniors, and recent graduates without requiring every student to follow the same pathway.

The Experience Translation Gap

Students develop valuable skills through coursework, jobs, service, leadership, student organizations, and projects. Many struggle to:

  • Recognize what the experience demonstrates
  • Name the skills and professional frameworks involved
  • Document results while the details are fresh
  • Translate the work into resume content and impact stories
  • Identify people who can verify or extend the contribution
  • Make the evidence visible to the right people

The opportunity isn't the finish line. The evidence is.

A Practical Response to an AI-Assisted Job Market

AI can help students produce polished application materials. Polished language isn't the same as credible evidence.

GradPlanHQ helps students create stronger signals behind the application: meaningful action, artifacts, results, stories, relationships, references, and visibility.

AI can improve the application. Evidence still comes from doing the work.

Some students will use the free tools and complete meaningful work independently. That's still success. The goal is to help students move from waiting for experience to building it.

What Students Actually Do

GradPlanHQ is a Practice Field, not a course library and not a project marketplace.

Students choose one professional action connected to a current goal. The action may involve networking, outreach, a class project, a campus role, a credential, service, employment, collaboration, visibility practice, or an optional Project Launcher.

They move the work forward, capture what happened, translate it into professional language, and use the stronger evidence and relationships to take the next step.

Action & Momentum Meetups: One Schedule, Different Speeds

Live video meetups create protected time around three goals and nine recurring processes:

Students choose the meetup connected to the job they're trying to move forward right now.

Connect & Discover

  • Identify values, interests, and story
  • Craft a LinkedIn bio and profile
  • Grow an online presence and network

Build Experience

  • Create projects to develop skills
  • Turn class projects into work experience
  • Earn credentials that validate skills

Tell Your Story

  • Translate skills into stronger resume content
  • Build impact stories for interviews
  • Build trust and credibility through a professional presence

The schedule repeats so students choose their pace.

Start early, low pressure

First-year students may attend once or twice a month and compound advantage over several years.

Steady build

Busy students may attend weekly and complete one Growth Cycle over a semester.

Need momentum fast

Students facing a deadline may attend several sessions a week and move through a focused cycle quickly.

Three Students. Three Timelines.

Bonnie: Start Early

Bonnie begins during the first year. She turns a high-school experience into the beginning of a professional story, develops a LinkedIn presence, practices networking, and completes a hometown project over the summer. Small actions have time to compound.

Maya: Build Internship-Level Experience

Maya is a junior without an internship lined up. She uses Design Your Own Internship to develop meaningful work with a partner organization, captures the evidence, builds STAR stories, and adds relevant credentialing where useful.

Luke: Start Now

Luke didn't secure an internship. He built a Teach It Back project around a resume optimization tool, collaborated with workforce-development leaders, trained 120 students, exceeded the participation goal by 20%, and used the work as the required leadership challenge for a HarvardX credential.

“If the internship doesn’t happen, build the experience yourself. Nobody in an interview asks whether it was assigned to you.”

Student story shared with permission. Individual outcomes vary. Participation in GradPlanHQ doesn't guarantee employment, internships, credentials, or specific career outcomes. Bonnie and Maya are illustrative pathways.

Student momentum

Career Services helps students prepare for opportunity.

GradPlanHQ helps students build advantage before opportunity arrives.

The two are strongest when they work together.

How GradPlanHQ Complements Career Services

Career Services remains the trusted campus home for career exploration, advising, employer engagement, internship strategy, application support, and career decision-making.

GradPlanHQ provides a student-directed practice environment where students can act on that guidance.

Between appointments

Students move one meaningful task forward and return with better questions, clearer drafts, and recent examples.

After workshops

Students apply the resource, practice the skill, save the evidence, and revisit the process as needed.

Before recruiting

Students build professional identity, relationships, evidence, visibility, and stories before the stakes rise.

When the usual pathway falls through

Students can strengthen work already underway or create a meaningful alternative rather than allowing a gap to grow.

When Career Services has a resource students should use

Teach It Back can turn resource adoption into peer leadership. Students learn the resource, apply it, and help other students use it effectively.

Practical Ways to Begin

Share the free tools

Add selected resources to advising follow-ups, workshops, first-year events, resource pages, or student communications.

Refer a small group

Invite students with a shared need to use a Practice Field pathway and review the evidence they create.

Pilot one cohort

Start with first-year students, internship seekers, student employees, graduating seniors, or another defined population.

Sponsor access

Fund memberships for a defined group while agreeing in advance on privacy, reporting, and learning questions.

Co-design one challenge

Help students increase adoption of an existing resource, communicate a career initiative, or solve a bounded student-facing problem.

Explore a chapter

Create a more relevant virtual participation environment using shared GradPlanHQ infrastructure rather than building a separate community.

What Success May Look Like

  • Earlier student engagement
  • More students taking meaningful professional action
  • Stronger use of Career Services resources
  • More artifacts, metrics, stories, and references
  • Stronger candidate signals
  • Continued momentum after a missed internship or recruiting cycle
  • More confident networking and employer conversations
  • More visible campus and community pathways
  • Practical learning before expansion

Success isn't simply participation.

Success is helping students build Experience, Proof, Relationships, Visibility, and momentum that continue creating opportunities.

Start With One Useful Move

Start small.

  • One advisor.
  • One student group.
  • One event.
  • One pilot cohort.

Learn what students can build when momentum has a place to continue.

GradPlanHQ complements existing Career Services programs and doesn't replace institutional advising, employer engagement, academic programs, internships, experiential learning, or student-success initiatives.
